Event Overview
On Friday, July 11th, in a proactive response to the severe flooding that has devastated Akure-South Local Government, the Chairman, who also serves as the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Ondo State, Hon. Fasua Gbenga Timothy, welcomed a delegation from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) alongside their counterparts from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) led by Prince Oriade Wellington Adebawo, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency Response at the local government secretariat. Their visit aimed to conduct a thorough assessment of the flood’s impact on the community and to coordinate potential interventions from both the state and federal levels. During the visit, the team undertook an extensive assessment tour of the severely affected areas, closely examining the scope of the damage and engaging with flood victims to understand their immediate needs. Hon. Fasua, who accompanied the delegation throughout the inspection, expressed profound concern regarding the calamity's toll on residents, their homes, and vital infrastructure, including roads. In his remarks, Hon. Fasua provided insights regarding the local government’s collaborative efforts with the state government to facilitate drainage and water clearance operations, which have been ongoing for approximately two months. He earnestly appealed to both the state and federal governments, through NEMA, for swift delivery of relief materials and long-term support aimed at rebuilding affected communities and assisting displaced individuals. He also underscored the necessity of finding durable solutions to the recurrent flooding challenges in the region. “This disaster has disrupted local livelihoods, forced families to flee their homes, and severely damaged critical infrastructure. We earnestly urge NEMA and all relevant agencies to swiftly intervene to provide relief and support to our residents. As a responsible government, we are fulfilling our obligations, and we implore the federal government to extend assistance to our affected populace,” he stated. Prince Oriade Wellington Adebawo commended Hon. Fasua for his exemplary leadership and the commendable efforts he has undertaken to enhance both human and infrastructural development within the council area. He assured the Chairman that the data and insights gathered during the assessment would promptly be escalated to the appropriate authorities to ensure timely action and to implement effective long-term solutions to the flooding crisis.
